Your Weekend Planner to the Beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park

Weekend Planner

Enjoy the beautiful summer weather and Indiana Dunes scenery this weekend with a hike through Indiana’s Calumet Trail.

This trail runs along the South Shore Line parallel also to the Lake Michigan south shore; this sandwiched trail is quiet and relaxing with few road crossings. Let the South Shore Train take you to the Dune Park or Beverly Shores Station and hop directly onto the Calumet Trail.

From these two starting points on the trail, you have many options for hiking and biking. The 9-mile Calumet Trail also connects to the Dunes Kankakee and Porter Brickyard Trails providing miles and miles of wonderful scenery bordering the Indiana Dunes National Park. From the Dune Park Station, take a one-mile walk or bike ride to the Indiana Dunes National Park for a day at the beach. If you are looking for more of a hike, take the Calumet Trail 5.5 miles west right up to the Beverly Shores Station.

The Indiana Trails website provides even more details on the Calumet Trail’s location, wildlife, and more. https://www.indianatrails.com/calumet-trail

The Indiana Dunes National Park entry requires a $7 gate fee for Indiana residents and $12 for all out of state residents. For further information visit https://www.nps.gov/indu/index.htm.

After your hike, grab a delicious bite to eat at Beverly Shores’ Goblin and the Grocer, just a 1 minute walk from the Beverly Shores Station, open Wednesday- Sunday 11am-9pm. Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner, throw in dessert, and even preview the deli for some take-home treats. A quick 1-minute walk from Goblin and the Grocer will take you right back to the Beverly Shores Station where you can hop back on the South Shore Line and wrap up your day!
