As part of its ongoing commitment to safety, the South Shore Line announces it will host an emergency preparedness drill on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, on the Monon (West Lake) Corridor.

The federally mandated drill is a key component in the SSL’s continuing efforts to familiarize first responders with railroad crisis response procedures. It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CT and last through approximately 12 p.m. CT on Dec. 10.

The drill is to be located on the SSL Monon (West Lake) Corridor. An employee-in-charge will be present to maintain the safety of all drill participants and the motoring public.

The emergency scenario involves a passenger train that has a fire onboard with a smoke-filled car. The following agencies and organizations plan to participate: the Federal Railroad Administration; Hammond Fire Department; NICTD Transit Police; and others.

Please note: This drill is an internal exercise and will not be open to the public or media.
