East Chicago Station parking lot October-December 2019

The South Shore Line announces that a new, signaled SSL entrance/exit will be constructed at the East Chicago Station parking lot on Michigan Street (see attached map and rendering). The project is scheduled to begin Oct. 12, with completion and implementation scheduled for December 2019.

The new SSL parking lot entrance/exit will be located across from the Lear Corp. entrance/exit on Michigan Street. This new intersection shared with Lear will consist of a four-way traffic signal and signaled turn lanes.

Additionally, in late November, modifications will be made to the existing eastern Michigan Street entrance/exit, which will be converted to an entrance-only for westbound Michigan Street traffic only. Eastbound Michigan Street traffic will no longer be able to enter and no vehicles will be permitted to exit at the east end of the parking lot.
The existing western Michigan Street entrance/exit and the Indianapolis Blvd entrance/exit will not be impacted.

During the construction, there will be some reduction in available commuter parking due to construction laydown and access. Therefore, the City of East Chicago has graciously offered the Roxanna Park parking lot (formerly Roxanna School) to accommodate commuter overflow parking while the main parking lot improvements are being completed. This lot will be available to commuters only between Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, 2019.

As a reminder, the station expansion project is also expected to be completed in late December 2019, at which time, those parking spaces in the construction area will re- open.

The parking lot project is being completed by Barton Malow of Portage, Ind.
