Jazz Fest August 31 to September 3

  • August 31 and September 1:  We will operate a weekday train schedule
    • Bikes are permitted on WB Trains 6 and 106, and EB Trains 11 and 111
    • Alcohol is prohibited on all trains after 7:00 pm.  Glass bottles are prohibited at all times.
  • September 2-3:  We will operate a weekend/holiday train schedule
    • Bikes are permitted on all bike rack equipped trains.  For a list of weekend/holiday trains please click here

The South Shore will operate an extra westbound train to Millennium Station for the Air & Water Show. This extra will depart on westbound Train 606’s (9:57 a.m.) time from Portage/Ogden Dunes making all regular stops to Chicago.

Gary Metro Center Renovations to Impact Access to South Shore Platform

The Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) is beginning to renovate the Gary Metro Center.  As part of this work we were required to temporarily remove our Ticket Vending Machines located on the 2nd floor of the Metro Center.  We encourage South Shore passengers to use our convenient smartphone app as an easy to use alternative until the TVMs are reinstalled.  Passengers may also pay with cash ONLY on the train.

South Shore Line introduces contest for educators

During South Shore Line’s (SSL) Teacher Appreciation Week, essay applications will be accepted from educators for a chance to win free field trip transportation for their class.

To thank local educators for their hard work, SSL created Teachers Appreciation Week, where educators are invited to ride the SSL for free from August 7- August 13, on all off-peak weekday and all weekend trains. To ride, educators will need to present a valid school ID.

In addition to free rides, SSL is offering teachers a chance to win free transportation for their class for a field trip!

Based on the overwhelming reaction to the July 1 schedule change, the South Shore will be changing three popular trains to their pre-July 1 departure times from Millennium Station effective Tuesday, July 18.  The departure times affect Trains 117, 17 and 217 and are highlighted in bold below. Organizers of Northwest Indiana’s marquee summer festivals are providing a FREE shuttle bus service from South Shore Line’s Hammond Station to the Festival of the Lakes and Pierogi Fest. Avoid the hassle of navigating road construction detours, and take advantage of this great free service.
