Kids Ride Free Program
The South Shore Line is a great way to take your kids on day trips exploring the wonderful things to do and see in their own back yard. And now, with the better-than-ever Kids Ride Free program (The Family Plan), it’s never been so affordable!
On weekends, holiday and daily off-peak trains, up to 3 children 13 years of age and under may ride free when accompanied by a parent or guardian*. Additional children will be charged a reduced fare of half the normal rate.
Fun with the kids just got affordable! So, choose your first adventure, check the train schedule, grab the kids, bring your Kit the Fox passport, and get ready to make some memories!
*A guardian must be at least 21 years of age and legally responsible for the well-being of the children. Train personnel reserve the right to request identification and proof of age from the guardian or any child riding free. Passengers unable to provide identification must pay the full applicable fare.
Meet Kit the Fox and Friends
Meet Kit the Fox, the South Shore Line’s adventurous young traveler from the Indiana Dunes National Park.

Together, Kit and friends help kids explore the South Shore Line through reading, coloring, train rides, and family adventures.
Kit and Friends Passport
Bring the Kit and Friends Passport on your next South Shore Line trip and start collecting punches. Kids can earn one punch each time they board and ride the train. Once they collect four punches, they can submit their completed passport for a chance to receive a Kit the Fox stuffed animal.
How to submit a completed passport
- Take a picture of the completed punched passport page.
- Fill out the form below and upload the picture of the punched page.
- Click Submit Completed Passport.
Stuffed animals will be shipped within approximately three weeks. One Kit the Fox stuffed animal per child, while supplies last. Program subject to change without notice.
Color the Characters
Kids can also bring Kit and his friends along for the ride.
Download a coloring cutout, color your favorite character, cut it out, and take it on your next South Shore Line trip. Then snap a photo and share it with South Shore Line for a chance to win free tickets.
How to enter
- Color Kit or one of his friends.
- Cut out the character.
- Take the character on your next South Shore Line train ride.
- Take a photo.
- Share the photo and tag @SSLKitAndFriends to be entered into a drawing for free South Shore Line tickets.*
