Passengers are advised that the South Shore Line will operate a WEEKEND/HOLIDAY train schedule on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, due to severe sub-zero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills.
In Indiana, a Cold Weather Advisory will be in place beginning at 3 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, which includes dangerously cold wind chills as low as -25 degrees. In Chicago, an Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect at 3 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, with dangerously cold wind chills as low as -30 to -40 degrees. Wind chills of -15 to -25 degrees will persist through the weekend.
In addition to operating a weekend/holiday schedule, the following service revisions will be in effect on Jan. 23:
- WB Train 102 will operate on its regular weekday schedule Friday, Jan. 23, arriving at Millennium Station at 5:32am.
- Weekend EB Tr 609 will extend its route on Jan. 23, operating through to the South Bend International Airport.
- An extra eastbound train will operate out of Millennium Station on Jan. 23. The Extra train will depart Millennium at 4:15pm (Van Buren St. at 4:17pm), make all stops, and terminate at the South Bend Airport.
The weekend/holiday train schedule will be implemented on Jan. 23 as a precautionary measure, as ice and sub-zero temperatures can adversely impact track, overhead wire, and train car mechanical components.
Maintenance crews will be on stand-by, and SSL employees will be working continuously to minimize the severe weather impact. However, train delays are possible due to the mechanical, rail and/or wire issues that may occur during sub-zero temperatures.
Passengers are advised to allow extra travel time to get to destinations, and to exercise caution in parking lots and train platforms.
We anticipate train operations to run as scheduled, however any changes in service will be promptly posted to our website Service Updates, the South Shore mobile app, and via email/text notifications (click here to sign up). The modified train schedule is subject to change as weather conditions dictate.
