To show gratitude and to say thank you for their service, the South Shore Line (SSL) is inviting all Veterans to ride the train free of charge on November 7 through November 11, 2026. Active military personnel and veterans are welcome to ride the SSL for free without showing identification. On Veterans Day (Nov. 11), trains will follow the regular weekday service hours.
“Veterans Day is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and sacrifices of those who have served our country,” commented Nicole Barker, Chief Experience and Engagement Officer at the SSL. “The South Shore Line is proud to offer free rides as a small token of our appreciation, and we look forward to welcoming active military personnel and veterans aboard as we honor their service to our nation.”
As our train personnel walk through the train, please let them know that you are active military personnel or a veteran, and we will provide you with a ride at no charge. No identification will be required.
Up to three children 13 years of age and under may ride free with each military personnel/veteran on off-peak weekday and all weekend trains (off-peak weekday trains arrive at Millennium Station after 9:30 am CST and depart Millennium Station before 3:30 pm and after 6:30 pm CST).
Throughout the year, the SSL has welcomed various groups to take advantage of free round-trip transportation on designated days, most recently, first responders. Keep up with the SSL on social media for the official announcement and details of this special promotion.
