SSL Holiday Service Information

Experience the magic of the season at some of the most anticipated events along the South Shore Line from South Bend to Chicago. To ensure SSL provides the best experience possible to riders this holiday season, the holiday train and ticket office schedule is available in advance. Please see the schedule below for more information:

Teachers Ride Free

  • To thank local educators for their hard work this school year, SSL is inviting teachers to ride for free from Wednesday, Dec. 22, through Wednesday, Dec. 29, on all weekday, weekend, and holiday trains. To ride, educators will need to present a valid school ID. *Reminder: The last car of all rush hour trains between Michigan City and Chicago is a Quiet Car.

 Holiday Train Schedule

  • Friday, Dec. 24 – SSL operates a regular weekday schedule on Christmas Eve.
  • Saturday, Dec. 25 – SSL operates a weekend/holiday schedule on Christmas Day.
  • Friday, Dec. 31 – SSL operates a regular weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve. Alcohol is prohibited after 7pm; glass bottles are prohibited at all times.
  • Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022 – SSL operates a weekend/holiday schedule on New Year’s Day.

 Ticket Office ScheduleIf ticket office is closed please purchase from ticket vending machine, South Shore mobile app, or onboard the train (cash only).

  • Friday/Saturday, Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1 – All ticket offices will be closed except Millennium Station. Millennium Station hours: Dec. 24 & Dec. 31, 9:05a-4:30p; Dec. 25 & Jan. 1, 9:35a-5p. NICTD administrative offices in Chesterton and Michigan City will be closed.

 MASK REQUIREMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH 3/18/22: Per federal orders, the SSL continues to require masks in all SSL stations and onboard trains throughout Indiana and Illinois. This order is in effect regardless of vaccination status. Passengers who do not comply with the mask mandate will be subject to removal from trains. Certain passengers are exempt from the mask mandate, including passengers with medical/health issues and children under the age of 2.
