To show appreciation and say thank you for their service to the community, the South Shore Line (SSL) is inviting doctors, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, other medical personnel, law enforcement and NIPSCO employees to ride the train free of charge Sunday, September 6, through Friday, September 11, 2026, on all Westbound and Eastbound weekday and weekend trains.
The addition of NIPSCO employees recognizes the crews and personnel who have worked tirelessly following the recent severe storms in Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area to restore power throughout the region, including service critical to South Shore Line operations.
To ride free, eligible personnel must present a valid work ID to SSL train personnel showing they are employed by NIPSCO or at a hospital, doctor’s office, medical facility, fire department, police station, prison, Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), or aforementioned related agency. Law enforcement encompasses police officers, correctional officers, TSA agents, and other security personnel.
“The South Shore Line is honored to recognize the men and women who serve our communities every day,” said Amber Kettring, Manager of Customer Service and Communication at SSL. “Following the recent storms, we are especially grateful to the NIPSCO crews who have worked tirelessly to restore power throughout Northwest Indiana, including along our rail line. Offering complimentary rides is one small way we can show our appreciation to them, as well as the medical professionals, first responders and law enforcement personnel who do so much for our communities every day.”
Throughout the year, the SSL gives back to the community by welcoming various groups to take advantage of free transportation on designated days. In the near future, the train will be offering free transportation for military personnel, including active-duty, reserves, and veterans, in honor of Veterans Day. Keep up with the SSL on social media for the official announcement and details of this special promotion.
SSL also offers reduced fares for seniors, active-duty military personnel, commuting students, infants, and passengers with disabilities on all trains year-round. And, up to three kids 13 and under always ride free on all daily off-peak, weekend, and holiday trains.
