The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Northern Indiana and the Chicago area with hazardous weather conditions, including freezing rain and total ice accumulations of 1/10-inch to 1/4-inch.

The NWS advises difficult travel conditions will persist overnight tonight, Jan. 22, and into Tuesday, Jan. 23. La Porte County, Ind., has issued a Travel Warning through noon Jan. 23, which implements travel restrictions throughout the county.

Passengers should expect slick conditions and ice accumulation, with impacts to Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning commutes. If travel is necessary, please allow extra travel time to get to destinations, and to exercise caution in parking lots and train platforms.

SSL employees will be working to minimize the severe weather impact, and ice-breaker trains will run early tomorrow morning to de-ice overhead wires prior to rush hour. Passengers are advised train delays are possible due to the mechanical, rail and/or wire issues that may occur during an ice storm.

Any disruptions or changes in service will be promptly posted to our website service updates, the South Shore mobile app, and via email/text notifications (click here to sign up).

NOTE: Temporary busing to stations between Gary and Dune Park remains in effect. Click here for more information. Due to road conditions, buses may experience further delays.
